The kids vanish to another world when they’re online. And there’s a wolf (or three) waiting in the shadows. Protect them by instilling basic rules that will save them from common mistakes.

How can we train our kids to stop and think before sending pictures, downloading apps, or messaging strangers? Use this new poster set!  It’s an engaging resource to help children learn and remember the rules.

Who needs it?

Children aged 3-11, who are using any kind of smart device, in or outside the home. There are two versions – one for younger kids, and one for kids who can read independently.

What’s in it?

These Internet Safety Rules are sensible, but not presumptuous. They’re basic guidelines about interacting with people (only those we already know), taking pictures (after asking permission), and trying new apps or games (only after checking with a carer). Put up one poster or more, familiarise yourself with the rules, and remind your children about them regularly. They’ll become engrained throughout the family and offer valuable protection around the kids while they’re exploring the digital world. Plus there's also a version which you can personalise for your family!

Beautifully illustrated format

The posters are visually bright and attractive, with appealing illustrations and clear wording.  They’ll look great on your fridge, pinboard, or - here’s an idea – back of the bathroom door…

Bonus: Family Internet Agreement

Create a Family Internet Safety Agreement that your child can sign. It makes your expectations crystal clear, and together, you can negotiate the consequences if rules are broken.

1. Introduce the topic: Start by having a casual conversation about online safety with your children. Explain that you want to teach them how to stay safe while using the internet.

2. Use the Internet Safety Rules Posters: Display the posters in a visible area of your home where everyone can see them easily, such as near their computer or on the fridge. Take some time each day to discuss one rule at a time, explaining its message and discussing why it is important.

3. Sign the Family Internet Safety Agreement: Sit down
together as a family and discuss your family rules for using the internet. Make sure everyone understands, negotiate consequences for breaking the rules and agrees to follow these rules.

4. Engage in Colouring-In Activity: The coloring-in activity can be a fun way to reinforce key concepts related to internet safety while spending quality time with your kids. Set aside dedicated time for this activity, providing them with coloring sheets that have illustrations depicting various aspects of online safety (such as asking before you share someone’s pictures online). As they colour, talk about each concept in detail and encourage questions from your children.

5. Regularly revisit and reinforce: Remember that learning about internet safety is an ongoing process rather than a one-time event. Continuously remind your children about the agreed-upon rules from the Family Internet Safety Agreement during their online activities, reinforcing good practices regularly through conversations.

By following these steps, you'll help instil crucial knowledge regarding internet safety in your children while fostering open communication within your family.

really helpful contract

I think this is a great idea...just THINK the guidelines are a little bit strict, but child is not yet ready, so I may change my mind as we use this.

Oooh, Linda... you do have me thinking about whether there is a way to remove some rules on the colour poster! Let me think about how to make it more flexible! There is a way to do it with some free software, but I would have to do an explainer video to show you how to do it!

One way around it, is to use the colouring in pages instead, and to post them on your wall! Or to sit down with your child and read the little A4 colouring in book ! Ooh, I will reach out to the artist and see if she can turn it into colour A4 pages for me, and then you could make up your own little book of internet safety rules to read together! And leave out the pages that don't work for your child!

I will try to find a way for more flexibility!!!! Thanks, Cath

UPDATE: I have added a version of the poster, colouring pages and fold-up book without words (so you can rewrite them in a way that works better for your family). And the artist is also turning the poster for younger kids into single full-colour pages for me, so you can then individually print out the rules that you want to use!

UPDATE 3 March 2024: Linda, I am about to email you a gift card for being the winner of the monthly draw for leaving a review. Congratulations!

Internet Safety Rules

As always Cath is a life/time saver. I was thinking I needed to come up with something regarding internet safety that outlined our family rules. I opened my inbox and Cath had shared a new resource about this very subject. It was just what I was looking for but saved me time and energy. I like how she offers the resource for different age groups (readers and non readers). Thank you once again.

It is already taped to the fridge door!

This is perfect timing as I found some photos on my daughter's iPad of her private parts! So this will help me to teach her what our family rules are. We have already printed out the little book, and colouring in one page a day! Thank you!!!!!!!
