A hands-on way to make body talks easier (and less awkward!)

Your child is curious about bodies – and sometimes words or flat pictures just don’t cut it.
That’s where these DIY anatomical models come in. Using clay, you can create 3D, anatomically correct models that make learning about private parts clear, safe, and memorable.

Designed by sexual health nurse and educator Cath Hakanson, this step-by-step activity gives you a practical, shame-free way to explore body parts, hygiene, differences, and even trickier topics like masturbation or sexual development – in a way that’s age-appropriate and guided by your values.

With this resource, you can:

  • Turn curiosity into learning – satisfy “What’s that?” moments without mystery or embarrassment.
  • Make body knowledge stick – 3D models help kids understand and remember more than flat diagrams.
  • Build trust and connection – show your child they can come to you for answers about their body.
  • Tackle tricky topics – from hygiene to pleasure, boundaries to anatomy, all at a pace that feels right for your family.

What’s inside:

  • Digital, step-by-step photo instructions for modelling an anus, clitoris, vulva, and penis (with and without a foreskin).
  • Guidance for making the activity safe, inclusive, and age-appropriate.
  • Ideas for using the models in everyday conversations about:
    • Body parts and differentces
    • Hygiene and self-care
    • Safe masturbation
    • Sexual development
    • Answering awkward questions with confidence

Make it work for your family

You stay in control of how much detail to share. If your child is younger, you might only model the outer parts and focus on names and hygiene. For older children or teens, you can build in more detail to support discussions about development, pleasure, or safe touch.

You don’t need to be artistic to get great results. Each stage of the process is photographed clearly so you can follow along, even if clay modelling isn’t usually your thing.

And because every family has their own values, the guide leaves room for you to choose the language and topics that fit your beliefs, making it as adaptable as it is practical.

Bring your conversations to life

You don’t need artistic skills – just some clay, your hands, and these instructions.
Books are great. But models? They’re the ultimate show-and-tell.

Suitable for parents of children aged between 6 to 18 years.

How easy is it to create these anatomical models? Are they user-friendly for someone with no prior experience?
Absolutely. As long as you follow the step-by-step instructions, you’ll be fine! My teenager has made them, as well as other children aged as young as 6 and as old as 18. Younger children may just need a little help.

Some models are easier than others – the penis and anus are the simplest to make, the clitoris is a little trickier, and the vulva is the most detailed because it has more parts.

What materials will I need?
You can use air-dry clay, play dough, plasticine, or any modelling clay. You could even use pastry, biscuit, or bread dough! You can buy clay ready-made or make your own at home.

Do I have to make these with my kids?
Not at all! You can make them on your own first and then use them for teaching. Some parents like to have the models ready before a conversation, while others enjoy making them together as part of the discussion. There’s no “right” way – it’s whatever works best for you and your child.

How can I use them once they’re made?
You can bring them out for body anatomy chats, use them alongside books or diagrams, or keep them handy for when a tricky question pops up. They’re especially useful for showing size, shape, and parts in a 3D way – something that flat pictures just can’t match.

Can these models help address misconceptions or confusion about genital anatomy and function?
Yes – that’s one of their biggest strengths. Because they’re realistic and labelled, they make it much easier to explain what’s what. You can hold them in your hand or place them over your body to show where they are, then talk through their function and purpose in an age-appropriate way.

Won’t this be embarrassing?
It might feel awkward at first – but using a model takes the focus off you and puts it on the object, which can actually make conversations easier. Kids often respond with curiosity rather than embarrassment when they see you being relaxed and matter-of-fact. And the more you use them, the more natural it feels for both of you.

This helped my child feel less worried about puberty

My son has been asking a lot of questions about puberty, especially about penises, body hair, and how his body might change as he grows. Your Body has been such a helpful resource because it shows real diversity in bodies, including adult naked bodies and child bodies, without making it feel awkward or shameful. He was worried about growing hair on his back, and this helped us talk about how bodies are all different - and that difference is part of growing up.

I absolutely love this. This has helped me talk to my young children about different body parts, it also opens up conversation about body types. Everyone is different and I want my kids to know that! I definitely plan to purchase more in the future to help me as my kids grow.
