Age Groups

It starts with a question you didn’t see coming…

They’re deep in Minecraft, bingeing Bluey, or chatting on Roblox when suddenly they ask:
“Why can’t I talk to strangers online?”
“Is it okay if I share a picture?”

And your heart sinks. How do you explain the dangers without scaring them? How do you set rules that actually stick?

That’s why I created the Online Safety Activity Book

A printable workbook filled with 19+ illustrated pages that sneak big safety lessons into fun stories, questions, and activities. Most kids won’t even realise they’re learning — but you’ll know you’ve planted the seeds of safer screen habits.

Written by me, Cath Hakanson – a sexual health nurse, therapist, and parent – this resource draws on 25+ years of experience helping families teach body safety and online safety with clarity and confidence.

With this activity book, you’ll be able to:

  • Start conversations about internet safety without lectures or eye-rolls
  • Teach your child to recognise risks and ask for help when something feels “off”
  • Establish clear family rules around gaming, messaging, photos, and screen time
  • Feel more confident knowing you’ve given them the tools to navigate the online world safely

What’s inside:

  • 📖 Two versions:
    • Ages 3–6 (non-readers, with adult support)
    • Ages 7–12 (independent readers)
  • 19+ black-and-white illustrated activity pages
  • Guided questions to spark meaningful discussions
  • Matching rules with our Internet Safety Posters (bundle them for extra impact!)
  • UK and US spelling versions included

💡 Tip: Print just a few pages at a time to keep your child engaged.

Worried it won’t fit your family?

Don’t be. These activities are designed to be flexible. You can adapt the examples and rules to match your own values, your child’s stage, and your family’s screen time routines.

Parents tell me:

“This was the first time my kids actually listened to me about online safety. We laughed, coloured, and ended up setting our rules together. Huge win.”

Suitable for parents of children aged between 3 to 11 years.

How will this activity book help my child stay safe online?
The workbook uses short stories, questions, and activities to get kids thinking about safe and unsafe online situations. Instead of you doing all the talking, the activities guide your child to learn, reflect, and practise what to do if something feels wrong.

What age group is it suitable for?
There are two versions: one for ages 3–6 (with an adult to read aloud) and one for ages 7–12 (for kids who can read independently). Both cover the same core safety messages, just adapted for your child’s stage.

What’s the difference between the two versions? How do I choose?
The ages 3–6 version is designed for children who can’t yet read. It uses simple language, bigger illustrations, and questions for you to ask aloud.

The ages 7–12 version is written for independent readers. It goes deeper into issues like sharing photos, screen time, and reporting unsafe messages.

If your child is on the cusp (say 6 or 7), many parents choose both so they can grow with the resource.

Do I need to sit with my child while they use it?
For younger children, yes — you’ll need to read the questions and support them. Older children can do many activities on their own, but you’ll get the best results if you sit together, talk about their answers, and connect the activities back to your family’s rules.

How many pages are included?
Each book has 19+ illustrated, black-and-white pages you can print at home. That’s plenty to keep your child engaged without overwhelming them.

Can I use this with more than one child?
Absolutely. You can print as many copies as you need for your household. Many parents print one for each child so they can colour, write, and complete the activities at their own pace.

How does this support parents?
It’s hard to know where to start with online safety. The activity book takes the guesswork out by covering the basics for you — things like privacy, photos, messages, and what to do when something feels uncomfortable. You’ll feel confident you’ve taught the essentials, and your child will have fun while learning.

Is it easy to print at home?
Yes. You’ll receive a downloadable PDF that you can print instantly. Many parents like to print a few pages at a time, so the activities stay fresh and engaging.

What if I’ve already got the Internet Safety Posters?
The two resources work beautifully together. The posters act as a daily reminder, while the activity book gives your child the chance to practise and apply the rules in a hands-on way.

A lifesaver!

Just what I needed to start bringing in rules on iPad time! The kids have enjoyed the colouring in and we did talk whilst they did it. and I love how you can create a little book to read at their bedtime!

Internet Safety Rules

As always Cath is a life/time saver. I was thinking I needed to come up with something regarding internet safety that outlined our family rules. I opened my inbox and Cath had shared a new resource about this very subject. It was just what I was looking for but saved me time and energy. I like how she offers the resource for different age groups (readers and non readers). Thank you once again.

It is already taped to the fridge door!

This is perfect timing as I found some photos on my daughter's iPad of her private parts! So this will help me to teach her what our family rules are. We have already printed out the little book, and colouring in one page a day! Thank you!!!!!!!

really helpful contract

I think this is a great idea...just THINK the guidelines are a little bit strict, but child is not yet ready, so I may change my mind as we use this.

Oooh, Linda... you do have me thinking about whether there is a way to remove some rules on the colour poster! Let me think about how to make it more flexible! There is a way to do it with some free software, but I would have to do an explainer video to show you how to do it!

One way around it, is to use the colouring in pages instead, and to post them on your wall! Or to sit down with your child and read the little A4 colouring in book ! Ooh, I will reach out to the artist and see if she can turn it into colour A4 pages for me, and then you could make up your own little book of internet safety rules to read together! And leave out the pages that don't work for your child!

I will try to find a way for more flexibility!!!! Thanks, Cath

UPDATE: I have added a version of the poster, colouring pages and fold-up book without words (so you can rewrite them in a way that works better for your family). And the artist is also turning the poster for younger kids into single full-colour pages for me, so you can then individually print out the rules that you want to use!

UPDATE 3 March 2024: Linda, I am about to email you a gift card for being the winner of the monthly draw for leaving a review. Congratulations!
