Your child knows what a period is. Help them feel prepared for when it really happens.

Maybe you've talked about periods already, or you've read a book together. Opening a pad, finding their supplies in their bag and asking a teacher for help are different skills, and they go better when your child has had a chance to practise. Period Ready is a guided course you work through together, with short videos and a workbook, so your child practises before they need to.

Here's what's inside

A guided course for you and your child, a place to ask questions afterwards, and extra support for you.

THE COURSE
Watch. Talk. Practise. Prepare.

Short modules, each with a video and a workbook activity to do together. Your child will:

  • Understand what periods are, and the body changes before a first one
  • Try using a pad
  • Decide what goes in their period kit
  • Rehearse what to do if their period starts away from home
  • Practise a backup plan for leaks or no supplies
  • Work out who to ask for help, and what to say

There are two age pathways, 7 to 10 and 11 to 14. You get both, so you can choose the one that suits your child and switch if you need to.

You'll also find a few extra tools tucked in, for when it's something other than the information that's in the way. The Extra Help videos for seeing how something works again, like using different pads, the printables and checklists for the workbook and kit, Ask Cath for sending me a question, and the Parent Hub for setting up and supporting your child, with neurodivergent support and parent-only information on sex and reproduction. They're there when you want them.

And when new questions come up:

PERIOD HELP DESK
Answer their next question.
Somewhere reliable for your child to ask about periods and get clear, age-appropriate answers, instead of searching the internet.

🔒 Nothing typed into the Period Help Desk is stored or sent anywhere.

You'll also find a few extra tools tucked in, for when it's something other than the information that's in the way. The Extra Help videos for when your child wants to see how something works again, like using different pads, the printables and checklists for the workbook and the kit, Ask Cath for sending me a question and watching the answer videos I add, and the Parent Hub for help choosing a pathway, getting set up, and support for you, including neurodivergent support and parent-only information on sex and reproduction for when period questions lead to bigger ones. They're there when you want them.

Worried about doing it all at once?

You don't have to. There's no big period talk to get through. Watch a short video, talk about it, practise one thing, and stop there if that's enough for today. Come back tomorrow, next weekend, or whenever your child is ready for the next part. There's no prize for getting through it quickly.

Who it's for

Parents and carers of children aged 7 to 14 who are getting ready for a first period, or who have recently started and still need help working out what to do. You don't need to know when their first period will start, and your child doesn't need to be showing every sign of puberty before you begin.

It's built around bodies rather than gender, so it works for any child who has periods or may have them, including children who are transgender or non-binary. It works for single-parent, two-mum and two-dad families too. Just the science of how bodies develop.

It's for neurodivergent families as well. If your child needs clearer steps, shorter pieces, more repetition or more time to practise, that's built in, and there's support for you on shaping it for your child. The facts stay the same.

About Cath

I'm Cath Hakanson, a nurse, midwife, sexologist and family sex educator with more than 30 years of experience. I've heard the same worries from children again and again: when will my period start, and what am I supposed to do when it does?

I'm also a parent who's had to find these words at my own kitchen table. I'm an autistic ADHDer, raising neurodivergent kids of my own. That combination shapes the way I teach: clear, practical, direct, and focused on the child in front of you.

No judgement. Just practical help with what to say next.

What this doesn't cover

Each of my resources does one topic properly, rather than a bit of everything. This one is periods: what they are, how to prepare for a first one, and the practical skills for managing them.

If what you need is puberty more broadly, or explaining sex, there's a toolkit for each of those. And Period Ready is made for you to work through together, not to hand to your child on their own.

Knowing what a period is helps. Practising what to do helps more.

FAQ

Guarantee

Suitable for parents of children aged between 7 to 14+ years.

Period Ready is entirely web-based. Sign in on your phone, tablet or computer and you'll have ongoing access to both age pathways, the short videos and workbook activities for each module, the Extra Help videos, the Period Help Desk, Ask Cath, and the Parent Hub, which includes neurodivergent support and helps you get set up. You'll need the workbook and a few basic supplies for the practical activities, and the Parent Hub helps you get organised before you begin. Work through it over a weekend or one part at a time, then come back whenever your child needs a reminder or has a new question. With lifetime family access, it's built to be used as your child grows.

What actually is this? Is it a book?
No. It's an online course you work through together, with short videos, a workbook and practical activities, plus a Period Help Desk and a Parent Hub to come back to. There's no book to get through first. Watch, talk, practise, and stop whenever that's enough for today.

Do I need to download anything?
You access Period Ready online from your phone, tablet or computer, so there's nothing to install. You'll need the workbook and a few basic supplies for the practical activities, and the Parent Hub helps you get everything organised before you begin.

Does it save what I type in?
Nothing you type into the tools is stored or sent anywhere. Nobody sees what you asked, including me. The one exception is Ask Cath: when you choose to send me a question, it comes to me so I can answer it.

Can I use it for more than one child?
Yes. You get lifetime family access and both age pathways, so you can use Period Ready with siblings and choose the right pathway for each child.

Is it a one-time purchase?
Yes. You pay once and it's yours, with lifetime family access. No subscription and no renewal.

This is a digital product. Nothing physical will be shipped.

Is it okay to talk to my child about periods before they've started?
Yes. Knowing what to expect doesn't bring a period on sooner, and done calmly and in small pieces it doesn't frighten children. Many feel steadier knowing what's coming. Period Ready keeps everything factual and age-appropriate, so there's nothing in it you need to hold back.

Nothing has started yet. Isn't it too early?
No. You don't need to wait until a first period feels close. Starting early means your child can learn and practise without any urgency, and you can pause, come back and repeat things. The Parent Hub helps you choose the age pathway that suits your child now.

Have I left it too late? Their period has already started.
Not at all. Period Ready still helps if their period has only recently started. They can practise with period products, work through school and away-from-home situations, and build their kit. The Period Help Desk is there for the questions that come next.

I don't know much about periods myself. Can I still do this?
Yes. You don't need to teach the course from your own knowledge. The videos and workbook guide you through what to talk about and practise together, and the Parent Hub gives you extra information and support whenever you want it.

What if my child asks something I can't answer?
You don't need every answer ready. Your child can ask the Period Help Desk, or use Ask Cath to send me a question and watch the answer video I add. Both give clear, age-appropriate information, so neither of you has to search the internet.

Does Period Ready talk about sex?
The course for your child focuses on periods and what they need to understand them. The Parent Hub has extra parent-only information on sex and reproduction, so you have somewhere to turn if period conversations lead to bigger questions.

What if my child doesn't want to talk about periods?
You don't have to force one big conversation. Keep sessions short: watch a video together, try one workbook activity or practise one thing, and stop there. Come back when they're ready for more. The Period Help Desk also gives them somewhere to ask in their own time.

Is Period Ready suitable for my autistic or ADHD child?
Yes. The period information is the same, taught in more than one way: short videos, written and visual information, clear steps, repetition and practice. The Parent Hub includes neurodivergent support for you, covering things like sensory needs, processing and repetition.

We're a single-parent family, or my child is transgender or non-binary. Will it fit us?
Yes. Period Ready is for children who have periods or may have them, and it's built around bodies rather than gender. It's inclusive of single-parent, two-mum and two-dad families, and of transgender and non-binary children. The facts stay the same.

30-day no-hassle money-back guarantee.
