Know whether it's time, and what your child is ready for

Get the actual words, in language your child will understand

Know where to stop, so you don't say too much

Add your own family's values and boundaries around the facts

Your child just asked you something you didn't expect. Find the words to answer it - for exactly their age.

Maybe it happened in the car. Maybe at the dinner table. Maybe the question came completely out of nowhere.

You want to answer. You just need to work out what to say, and how much to say, at their age.

That's what the Sex Ed Q&A Toolkit is for.

Search or browse for the question your child asked, and get an age-specific answer back in seconds - with words you can actually use.

Instead of flipping through a book hoping you land on the right page, you go straight to the question you're being asked.

What you'll be able to do

  • Find the exact words for your child's age and question - instantly
  • Know how much information is enough, and when to stop
  • Answer without turning it into a lecture
  • Keep the door open, so they know they can keep asking
  • Add your own family's values and boundaries around the facts
  • Adjust how you explain it, so your child actually understands

Here's what's inside

ANSWER FINDER (the main tool)
Find the right words for their age and question.

Search for the question your child asked, browse by age, or use Practise mode to rehearse before you're put on the spot.

619 real questions kids and teens ask, with answers written for every age from 3 to 18 - many shown with both inclusive and traditional wording, so the words fit your family too.

And because knowing the answer isn't always the only thing that gets in the way, you'll also get these bonus tools:

BONUS: FEAR BUSTER
For when fear or doubt makes you hesitate to answer.

Maybe you're worried you'll say too much. Say the wrong thing. Make your child more curious. Or open up a conversation you don't feel ready for.

Find the worry closest to yours, and get the reasoning plus a line you can actually say - so the fear gets answered instead of shutting the conversation down.

BONUS: TROUBLESHOOTER
For when answering gets tricky.

Sometimes the problem isn't knowing the answer. It's the wrong time. A personal question. You genuinely don't know. Or you need to deal with how it was asked before you can answer it.

Get practical scripts for moments like these, so you can handle what's happening without shutting the conversation down.

BONUS: VALUES ADDER
For adding your family values and boundaries around the facts.

Sex education isn't only about the facts.

The Values Adder helps you work out how to share what your family believes, what you expect, and where your boundaries sit - right alongside the facts your child needs.

So the answer sounds like you, not a textbook.

You bring your family values. I help you find the words to put them around the facts.

BONUS: NEURO ADAPTER
For explaining things in a way your child can understand.

Sometimes it isn't the answer that needs changing. It's how the information is explained - more literal language, a visual, extra detail, smaller amounts at a time, repetition, clearer examples, more time to process.

It's built for neurodivergent kids, but the principle works for any child who needs information explained differently.

The facts stay the same. The teaching changes.

BONUS: PRINTABLE GUIDES
Prefer something you can print and keep nearby?

Download the questions and answers organised by age, from 3 through to 18, so you can read ahead, highlight what matters, or have the words handy when you need them.

Worried about saying too much?

Staying quiet doesn't protect your child - it just means they'll find the answer elsewhere, without you in the room.

The Sex Ed Q&A Toolkit means you don't have to choose between staying quiet and saying too much. It focuses on the question your child has actually asked - give them the answer first, add what they need to prevent a likely misunderstanding, then see whether they want to know more.

What changes

  • You know you’ve given enough - not too much and not too little
  • The words are ready before the pressure’s on
  • Next time a question lands, nervous or not, you know what to say

Who it's for

The Sex Ed Q&A Toolkit is for parents and carers of children and teens aged 3 to 18.

Your family might be religious, secular, conservative, progressive, or somewhere in between. I provide the factual information and the words to help you explain it. You add your own family values around those facts.

It's for neurodivergent families too - whether that's your child, you, or both of you. If your child needs things explained more literally, in smaller pieces, or with more time to process, the Neuro Adapter shows you how to change the way the answer is explained. The facts stay the same.

And if you feel like you should have started some of these conversations earlier - you're not too late. There's no catching up to do. Just answer what they're asking you today.

About Cath

I'm Cath Hakanson, a nurse, midwife, sexologist and family sex educator with more than 30 years of experience. Answering children's questions about bodies and sex has been my job for most of that time. The hard part was never the answer. It was saying it out loud, to a child, without making it weird.

I'm also a parent who's had to find these words at my own kitchen table. I'm an autistic ADHDer, raising neurodivergent kids of my own. That combination shapes the way I teach: clear, practical, direct, and focused on the child in front of you.

No judgement. Just practical help with what to say next.

What this doesn't cover

Each of my toolkits does one topic properly, rather than a bit of everything. This one is answering the questions your child asks you. When they ask, they've already told you what they want to know. You just answer it, with the facts, in words that fit their age.

If what you need is to raise something before they ask, there's a toolkit for that too. Explaining sex, puberty and talking about masturbation each have their own.

Get the words before you need them.

How it works

FAQ

Guarantee

For parents and carers of children and teens aged 3 to 18 years.

What actually is this? Is it a book?
No, it's a set of tools you use online. You tell it about your child, it works out what they need, and it gives you the words. No book to get through first, no course to sit down for. Open the tool that answers today's question, get what you need, and go and have the conversation.

The printable Q&A guides are included too, organised by age from 3 to 18, so if you'd rather read ahead on paper, that's there. Printable, and yours to keep.

Do I need to download anything?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing to install, nothing to update, and it works on a phone.

Does it save what I type in?
No. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere. Close the tab and it's gone. Nobody sees what you asked, including me.

Can I keep what it gives me?
Yes. Copy the words straight out and paste them wherever you like, or save and print the page.

Can I use it for more than one child?
Yes, as many times as you like. There's no limit, and no separate purchase per child.

Is it a one-time purchase?
Yes. You pay once and it's yours. No subscription and no renewal, and you won't ever need to buy it again.

Instant access to the Answer Finder, the extra support tools, and the printable Q&A guides. There's no course to work through and no start date. Sign in the moment a question lands, get what you need, and come back the next time. It's built to be used for years, not finished in a weekend.

This is a digital product. Nothing physical will be shipped.

How do I know I'm not giving too much information?
Answer the question they asked, add just enough to stop a likely misunderstanding, then stop. Their next question tells you how much further to go. Children take what makes sense to them and leave the rest, which is why a small answer is usually the right one.

If I answer honestly, won't it just make them more curious?
It's the fear that keeps most parents quiet, and it works the other way round. A child whose questions get answered stops hunting elsewhere. Curiosity that gets a straight answer settles. Curiosity that gets deflected goes looking.

My child is four and asking where babies come from. Isn't that too young to be answering?
Four-year-olds ask because they've noticed something, not because they want the whole story. The Answer Finder gives you the four-year-old version rather than the fourteen-year-old one, so you can answer honestly and still keep it small.

My child has never asked me anything. Have I left it too late?
No, and plenty of children never ask. Browse by age in the Answer Finder to see what children that age usually want to know, then raise one of those yourself. If you'd rather plan a conversation from scratch, that's what my other toolkits do.

My child asked something I've never heard another child ask. Will it even be in there?
Probably, or something close enough to use. The Answer Finder covers what children and teens actually ask about bodies, sex, puberty, reproduction and relationships, and you can browse by age to find the questions sitting either side of yours.

I go red and change the subject. I can't help it.
More common than you'd think, and worth naming rather than pushing through. The Fear Buster helps you work out which worry is actually yours, whether that's your own upbringing, saying too much, or getting it wrong. You don't have to feel comfortable to do this well.

I don't want to just hand them the facts. How do I get our family's values in there?
The facts are the same in every home. What changes is what your family believes around them, about privacy, relationships and timing. The Values Adder helps you work out where you actually sit, so you know what to add and what to leave for later.

They asked in the supermarket queue, loudly. What do I do in the moment?
Answer briefly, then finish it properly later. The Troubleshooter covers the awkward version: the wrong place, the wrong audience, a question about you, or one that lands at bedtime when nobody has the energy. It gives you the holding line and the way back to it.

Will this work for my autistic and/or ADHDer child?
Yes. The Neuro Adapter changes how you teach it: more literal wording, smaller pieces, more processing time, and adjustments for sensory needs, attention and communication. It matters here, because a child who takes words at face value needs the answer said plainly. The facts stay the same. The teaching changes.

Our family doesn't look like the one in most sex ed books. Will the words still fit?
Yes. Many answers come in an inclusive version as well as a traditional one, so you can pick the wording that sounds like your family. What your family believes about relationships, marriage or timing is yours to add on top, and the Values Adder is where you work that out.

the reassurance I needed!

I've got a kid who is starting to ask lots of questions. This has been a lifesaver, as it's allowed me to answer their questions. But more importantly, it's shown me how to talk about these things in a way they understand
